The single most important and useful business phone number to have and to be given is the DIRECT line.
You do not want to call the switchboard, get screened or transferred to the wrong Mr. Anderson. You do not want to try to navigate a phone directory by spelling the persons name on a touch pad. At 5:01pm the company or business phone number are rendered worse than useless, but if the person waiting for your call is at their desk, the DIRECT number will still ring. And if they are not at their desk, it might roll over to their cell phone. And if not, it will roll to their personal voice mail and they might get a text or email alert that your valuable message awaits.
If you have the DIRECT number, it will ring on his or her desk and might even have the caller ID displyaed and prompt the the person to immediately pick it up.
Having the DIRECT phone number means they want to take your call. It means you have a relationship. Please add DIRECT as a phone number classification option in Outlook.
