My status always appears as "Away" when I use New Outlook.
Make status work as intended, and as it does on Old Outlook
I'm using a mac version of outlook which means many of the solutions suggested by others are not available to this version. This issue is extremely frustrating especially now we are all working from home and need to build trust through digital products. People can lose their jobs due to this STUPID glitch caused by the product team's incompetency to fix such a basic issue.
I had the same issue. We had a migration at work to Office 365 that triggered the problem for me. I then signed out from Teams and signed in again, and this fixed the problem for me. Now Teams and Outlook office are synced again. It's a bit different for us though, since we also changed e-mail accounts, so this might not work for all. Since Outlook was most likely synced to the old email account in my case, and when I logged in to Teams with the new email account it fixed the issue.
I hope this could fix it for others as well. Try and sign out and then sign in to Teams.
this is REALLY ******* me off, still in 2021 this happens, what **** Microsoft, fix it or STOP forcing things on us! How do you expect us to see your product as a partner when you pull **** like this and we cant stop it, so we cant fix it for our clients (who ALL complain about it). Users use "status" to see if/when users are away or working. I am NEVER away, but my status shows me as away whenever I am not in your BS app! This is WRONG!!!
I FREAKING hate Microsoft does this **** without allowing us to override it and set as "BUSY"! I am always at my desk, I am always available, but of course MS does their own stupid thing, and sets me as away. This is UNTRUE, I am NEVER away unless overnight, so cut the garbage MS! Its January 19th, 2021, and its STILL the same **** as last year(s)! WHY?!?!

Amendment to my previous post:
There is a different application called Octopus Desk UC that seems to have taken precedence over Teams in the setting of a status.
Octopus Desk has set my status to "In a call" when I was on the phone, then crashed, then went back to "Away".
It seems that the status in Outlook is modified only by Octopus Desk whereas Teams does not have any influence in the Outlook status.
If you have a similar issue go check if any other application that you are running has a status that can be changed and see if changing the status has an affect on your Outlook status.
However I am convinced that this has not been an issue before and that Teams was actually the master of the status in Outlook. The Outlook status would always change when I set myself to busy or when I was in a call on Teams. I don't remember being on the phone through Octopus ever changed my Outlook status. Now the roles have switched and the Octopus Desk status is the master of the Outlook status and doing anything in Teams has no effect on Outlook.
Weird that it just suddenly changed like that.

I have suddenly started to have this issue. I would have the yellow status icon and "May be away - Free for next 8 hours" in Outlook even tho I am logged in to Teams and have the green icon and "Available" as my status.
It has worked as expected before but since today it no longer works correctly.
Restarting both Teams and Outlook, switching the status in Teams or using "Reset status" in Teams all do not work.
Guys, Please download the Skype for business and log in with your work email address. This will help for sure.
SOLUTION / ISSUE EXPLAINED.
You are set to "Away" in Email/Outlook because you don't have CHAT open, the status is for IM / Chat, so yes you are AWAY if your IM/Chat is not open.
What to do:
Option 1. Click the Chat Icon (speech bubbles) to open chat, you are then of course Available for Chat.
Option 2. Click your status with your Email window and choose to Sign Out of IM.
The status refers to your IM/Chat availability, Not your Email activity.

Same it's a a real problem!
Same problem, Teams shows I am available however outlooks states I am away. Click the button to reset status and it reverts to away immediately, it will not let you change it no matter what you do. I am working from home due to COVID and my bosses will think that I am not working if they away however I am actively on this computer for 12 hours a day.
I have the same problem. I don't want my colleagues to think I'm goofing off. I took someone's advice and clicked on the circle with my photo and clicked on "Sign Out". Then signed back in and my status is now 'available'. We will see if it stays that way.
Still happening, but a quick workaround is to first click on "Sign out of IM" followed by clicking on "Available."

Blimey, as soon as I chnage my statu smanually, Outlook overides it and displays me as 'away'.
Can' believe this is still an issue given the lengthy thread?

Still not solved? I'm experiencing this problem.
same with mine. it simply wont save the settings i choose.
it always resets my status as away and resets my reply settings so that when i uncheck show suggested replies, every time i sign out, it changes everything back to the defaults.
need a fix.

Same issue. Not showing my status correctly. I am actively typing and sending emails, and it is showing my status as Away.
