Don't make "focused" pre-sorting the default
I don't like automatic sorting into focused and other. I want default to just be all my mail, that could be a feature to opt in if people want it, but not sorted like that by default.
Thank you for using Outlook.com, and for providing all of this great feedback. Based on your feedback, I think we have an option that will make you happy. We actually do allow you to disable focused other, if you rather not view your mail in that way.
Follow these steps, and you will get your mail in one view
1) Click on the Gear in the top right
2) This opens the Quick Settings pane. From here you can turn off focused other.
Hope this helps!
It is rather annoying that I have to click on another email before the one I'm currently reading registers as having been read. After reading an email, clicking anywhere after that should register it as read. Also that focused option should not be turned on from the start. It is also very annoying to deal with. And should be left off and those who really truly want it will go and turn it on.

"Focused" inbox is useless and outright disruptive and confusing and it should not be enabled by default.

David! This is not a solution. The problem is that focused is still the DEFAULT, when it should be an OPTION. It seems that most users do NOT want it.
What is "focus"? I have a choice between "focus" and "other" - what am I choosing between? Is "focus" the new word for "sort"? Before adding something you should have put an explanation of what it is.
