The "Top Results" items when searching aren't sorted by date, which is confusing.
It appears the Top Results items are sorted algorithmically based by relevance (?), but that ends up being counterproductive - especially when I know I want the most recent response to a set of threads with a unique keyword.
I've found myself searching multiple times and overlooking the result because it is at the bottom of the Top Results list even though it is the newest reply/thread.
You're already pulling out these as the most likely results - I don't see the benefit of sorting such a short list by relevance vs. something like date.
"Top results" in Outlook email search (browser app) is AWFUL, please create ability to change this in settings.
I have just learned about this catastrophic failure on MS's part the hard way and, by the looks of it, will have to continue to waste time manually sorting all emails. What a fail.
I've seen lots of complaints about this feature already, over the space of several years, and yet this feature is still forced on users, I've not seen a single positive comment about it. it's just awkward, and another reason why I try to avoid using the web version of outlook when I can.
This is so bad, and I can't turn it off in the filter menu.
We need the ability to turn this "feature" off. Sort by date should SORT BY DATE.

Not being able to filter search results in general seems like a huge oversight. It's the kind of thing that loses a lot of trust because it feels like Microsoft thinks it knows better when it steps beyond personalizing web searches and into your personal email searches, with no way provided to claw any control back.
I hope this is changed soon. This alone is reason enough to stop using the service.
I have already made mistakes with my commitments to other managers, as a result of assuming that the top most of 3 "Top Results" was the most recent.
I'm really not sure how it was decided to a) make a 'top results' in the first place, and b) sort it DIFFERENTLY from the "All Results" below it. But I find it counterintuitive and difficult to use.
Undermines my trust in search. I wish my company had opted for Gmail -- I know how Google's search works. And it really works.

Nuke it. Dumbest 'feature' ever.
hey, just be glad that you have results period. I'm searching for unique words that I ********* KNOW exist in various emails, and quite often, outlook.live.com just just stalls with "Searching..." ...other times it will give some oblique error message. I'm really sick of this ****. Oh yea, when I do finally get some results, maybe Balmer sprinkled some magic fairy dust on their creaky database server from on high, the results are as you guys say "in god knows what order"...
search doesn't let us sort emails by sender and/or folder
Really, really hate this sort. Clearly there ought to be the option to change the sort order to a chronological.

I would much prefer search results to be sorted by date, with latest date first.
Really poor compensation for a feeble search engine. If search worked properly this wouldn't be needed.
As it is it never returns top results for me and I'd just rather have one list.
Like all new outlook features, 'worse than useless'. Let us turn it off. Better, don't enable it by default. Then do your beta testing by seeing how many people actually seek and use it...
Unable to access searches in date order. STILL. Despite a large number of complaints about this. Grrr.
The new look of outlook is fine, However the search function is terrible. It doesn't sort through my hundreds of email, it will show every email and simply highlight the word found in the heading. Really useless update in regards to the search results. Is there a way to change it back to how it looked / searched previously?
It's not a bug.
Corporate sabotage is a feature of the product.
Top results sucks! So do you for not giving us an option for changing it!!
I love top results. Please add it to the desktop client. Search results sorted by relevance is a very valuable feature for my day to day work.
Why did they add this very confusing feature without the ability to switch it off?

Completely agree with this comment:
I find this "top results" feature worse than useless.
Why not allow the user to turn it off?
