Automatic Expanding Folders
When moving an e-mail to a folder that has been expanded, passing over other (collapsed) folders makes them expand automatically immediately. This can move the desired destination folder off the page - most annoying. Folders should only expand after the mouse has hovered over for a certain period of time.

I too find this really bothersome. I like the idea of expand on hover and collapse on drop.

automatically expanding folders are a pain. there should be an option NOT to automatically expand them
Here's an idea:
Highlight mail(s) that you wish to move into another folder and press CTRL+SHIFT+V (Hotkey for Move Item)
Then make sure your Inbox highlighted and press WINDOWS+* (This will expand all folders)
Next thing is to simply type the foldername you want to move the item to and hit enter.
I do this every day and the mailbox I use literally has hundreds of subfolders.
Agree - please auto expand / auto collapse when dragging email to folders / subfolders.
This is my #1 dislike of Outlook (2016) mail.
Seriously, this can't be hard to implement, can it?? Even Lotus Notes had it when I last used it 3 years ago.
Previously collapsed folders that opened only to allow the email to be dragged in to it should auto-collapse as soon as the cursor has been moved away. Simple?

I totally agree.
Also, all mail folders are expanded by default when logging in and/or shifts to another folder or visit e.g Calendar and back.
Save the chosen selection of what folders are expanded and not.
Maybe this belongs to an another suggestion, if so; let me know and I will make one...

I must say you either a programmer or has a close one next to you; The suggestion is on point and the hover should be set for a 2 second stationary hover for the folder to expand. This should be a quicky for the coders. 1,2, on spot..... Expand!! nice suggestion; I got to deal with scrooling pass the newly expanded folder but you covered the solutions..

I also agree with this. Folders should only expand after the mouse has hovered over for 1-1.5 seconds.

I agree with this. I have a bunch of folder to which I sort emails. And this gets annoying when the collapsed folder expands and my destination folder gets out of screen.

I aggree too, this is very uncomfortable.
I've noticed this annoying issue too. In the old outlook you would have to hover a few seconds before the folders expand.

At least there are two workarounds (although I really hat this strange "new" behavior too):
1. mark a mail, click "move" button on the top bar, there should be a search field wherein you can type some characters and the matching folder(s) will be listed below and can easily be selected.
2. instead of dragging a mail item and moving with the mouse over the collapsed list of folders, just try to move it down besides (right side) the list of folders and when you have reached the desired one, than move back left over the target folder.

Agree with these comments; I've just had a very frustrating experience trying to manually move an item from my Inbox down to the last folder - I have quite a few sub folders, so every time I drag it to the side these expand. In the end i had to just keep moving it down folders until the required one was on screen. Right clicking and selecting 'move' also didn't work because this folder was not amongst the locations for some reason, and there didn't seem to be a way of selecting anything outside of the populated list (i.e. 'other' or 'more') as I would expect to see.
Agreed very annoying

There needs to be a delay before the folder expands so that just moving your mouse over the folder doesn't open its subfolders. Or provide a method, gesture, or secondary click that would allow you to close an opened subfolder.

Or better: folders should auto-collapse as soon as the cursor has been moved away. Then you get no delay and no folders absconding from the page.
I use are 3-4 folder levels and my inbox folders expand straight away when dragging an email down to an already opened subfolder.
It's very annoying because the folder I am aiming for disappears off the page!
This was my number one complaint. I attempted to drag and drop an email into another folder which was at the bottom of the scroll. If I dragged it over the collapsed folders it automatically expanded these folders making the one I was wanting quite challenging to get to using the drag and drop feature.
The inbox folders do not auto-expand when trying to drag and drop and email. I like the new search feature though. Also, double clicking on an email in the Inbox list does not expand it to full size anymore. I would like that included. Printing an email is easier, though. I like that.
