I liked the old hotmail from the late nineties better.
Hotmail keeps getting more non-user friendly with each update. There's no need for Focused and Other folders. The constant pop-ups to announce new mail is annoying. I've also had mail to inadvertently disappear into the Deleted folder while I'm trying to read it. I used to get emails to announce appointments from the Calendar. Now I just get a temporary pop-up that I often miss. Also, I cannot delete old contacts that I no longer wish to have. Please let me have the version from the late nineties when Hotmail was use-friendly.

First off, I just want to thank each and everyone of you for taking the time and providing feedback on the new Outlook.com experience. I totally appreciate that updates can often be frustrating when things change. I also want to thank everyone that has provided feedback over the course of the Beta to ensure that we address feedback.
With that being said, I do want to offer some types/advice on some options that you can select to get a view that is more in line with the old experience. This includes turning off the Colored bubbles :)
First click on the Gear in the top right hand corner. This will load the Quick Settings Pane. This pane includes all of the key features that are likely different between the old experience and the new experience.
To get a view that is similar to the old view I would turn off the following: Conversation View, Reading Pane (set to Hide), Sender Image (these are the colored initial circles), Group by Date (these are the date headers in the message list), and finally Attachment Preview.
Once these are off, the view should look VERY similar to the old experience.
Again please keep the feedback coming, the entire team is reviewing every submission and we are working on bringing additional improvements.
Some of these include, Density settings (this will help those that want a more compact view), updated spam/junk settings, Chat improvements, and much much more.
Thanks again for using Outlook.com!

Very simply, your webmail system has got progressively more bloated, slow and has lost focus of what is actually for.
Email is not a social media platform, it should not try to mimic them. we don't need colours or photos of the senders to know who has sent us stuff. We don't need to have only 10 lines of email displayed instead of 20 because you've decided there needs to be more white space on the screen and emails separated by the day they arrived (we could all easily read the date they arrived more than happily.)
We shouldn't have to click on menus or hover over things to display the most common of functions such as print or select email.
We don't need cosy little pictorial icons instead of the actual words such as "reply", funnily enough if we're reading and writing emails we can actually read the words rather than guess what the icons mean.
Emails are not conversations, there should always been the option to not be forced to read them as a conversation.
There is so much wrong with Hotmail (sorry, Outlook) now that I only log in when really pushed to do so. All other interaction is done via an app on the phone (not the Outlook one, as that's a mess too) -

bring Hotmail back. simple. period. I don't need my inbox to look like a scrapbook layout. I don't need colors, and circles, and columns, and extra buttons on top, down below, off to the sides.
My eyes go bonkers. Its all too busy and "artsy".
Its email. Make it more simple. -

If the focused and other folders continues as it is I will probably drop Outlook. Why can't this be an option. I also agree that I hate having emails just disappear into the deleted file. They should only go there when I delete them

Old v. New layouts is very subjective for preference some people like to have separate folders for certain emails (like emails with legalities involved and other things) but I can see why some people wouldn't like it.
(Though it shouldn't be moving things to your deleted folder that seems more like a technical bug than anything!)
Perhaps the option to switch between layouts so everyone can get what most appeals to them?
(Also the option to have notifications as pop-ups, emails or both?) -

Agree 100%.... if you read what everyone is telling you and try to implement it, you will end up reinventing the original hotmail, which just worked perfectly and never ever needed to be changed

Yes, definitely. I really like old interface of Hotmail. URL is included: http://windowsreport.com/old-hotmail-interface-back/
This was the best interface you ever had. I personally dislike everything that was done afterwards. In my opinion this was simple, fluid and all around great looking interface. Why kill something that works and looks great? Everything that you came up with after looks too rigid, choppy and unattractive. I vote for bringing the old Hotmail interface back from the late nineties!!!

I've had messages disappear too! It's frustrating. I can search and find them, but can't figure out where they are. They don't appear in the inbox. It's annoying. I missed several important messages this week. I even reported to one sender that I had not received her message. Upon searching, it was there and had been for 3 days. I've used Hotmail since the very beginning and this is the most complicated it has ever been.

PLEASE bring back simple and concise business like. If I wanted GMAIL, Facebook, or other email platforms I would sign up for that. I only use my hotmail since I have had the same one since 1998. I completely DISLIKE all the fluffy and fussy "upgrades". Have an option to use fluffy, but KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!!

It used to look so business like. As the years have gone by, and with each update, it looks more and more like social media and is often as slow and as fussy. I wager people aren't using 90% of whats in their Hotmail account or would ever have occasion to.

The single thing about these Focus groups is they get it wrong. i.e who thought windows 8 was a sodding Good Idea???
No we don't want multiple methods of input. Just simple email inbox, set of rules to organise if you want and an integrated calendar that will email you a reminder.
Also why not have a full width email box. I note on the beta that it doesn't read much of any email now. Useless
