dark/night mode is essential
Nowadays a dark or night mode is a necessary feature IMO.
It is my greatest pleasure to share this piece of news with you: Dark Mode is here, on the new Outlook.com!
What is Dark Mode?
Dark Mode is a more-pleasant way to read your Outlook.com email if you prefer interfaces that are less bright or if you are in a low-light environment. Dark Mode is available on the new Outlook.com experience (formerly known as the Outlook.com Beta experience) only.
How do I turn it on?
To turn on Dark Mode, open the Quick Settings panel by selecting the Gear icon at the top of your screen. The option to enable Dark Mode is near the top of the panel, immediately under Theme selection. If your browser is unable to support Dark Mode, consider using Microsoft Edge.
Why is Dark Mode not a theme?
When we designed Dark Mode, we debated having it exist in Outlook.com as a theme. We quickly concluded that the way most people would expect themes to work and the way Dark Mode works were fundamentally different. Also, we imagine that there would be a dark experience for all available themes in the future, so having Dark Mode be a separate toggle would facilitate that. Plus, this is consistent with many other applications that have a dark mode.
Will Dark Mode support themes?
Dark Mode only supports the default blue theme right now.
Why does my reading pane have a dark background for email messages I receive?
One of the most crucial principles we had when designing Dark Mode was to minimize the amount of eye strain that people felt. Many email clients on the web today advertise a dark mode, but we learned from interviews with others and our own usage that having the reading pane be on-light while the rest of the interface was left on-dark often made the experience worse than if the full screen were left on-light.
For 2017’s Halloween Theme, we experimented with placing a light gray background in the reading pane. While that resulted in a decrease in eye strain, the design wasn’t ultimately one that we liked for various reasons. We iterated on this problem a couple more times before landing on the solution that you now see, where email messages that you receive are recolored in a secret way that preserves the readability of the original message and preserves the intent of the original sender.
How do I see the original formatting?
You can see any email message that you receive in the original formatting by using the “Turn on the lights” button.
Thank you so much for your patience and support. We hope you love this!
Please add a "dark" them or mode.

I've been asking for this for years.. Not sure why it's so hard? Gmail has been offering this forever.
FWIW - If you're running Firefox, you can download an "addon" called invert colors and with a toggle in your menu bar it makes every thing dark. Some the pic colors are off, but it makes text reading 1000x better than the current bright white background.
must be still "a few loose ends that we need to tie up before making the feature available" if it still isn't an option 6 months later.
LOL still no dark theme?

Could we get a dark backround in some of the themes, all this white hurts my eyes

Add a dark theme for calendar and outlook.
Want to be able to apply color scheme not only to the top bar, but to the whole page - to eliminate bright white background which is blinding my at night
So... 6+ months later still no dark/night theme. wtf is taking so long?

You guys need a dark mode, like Yahoo mail has. I read my email first thing in the morning, when it is still dark. The white background is ******* the eyes.
We need a dark theme for the background :) Thx :)

Please add a Dark mode for outlook.com . Have it automatically switch from dark/light mode based on sunset and sunrise.
I would like to have night mode, reading these emails at night puts a lot of strains on my eyes from the white background, would like an option to atleast turn it down

PLEASE I need the dark theme that you added last Halloween ! It's very very important to me and to a lot of people! My eyes can't stand everything to be white like this! I literally use a custom dark theme for everything even facebook!
Please consider a dark theme option that stays forever, YouTube & Twitter already has it officially!
My husband just found a new Windows Live for Windows 10 and it has a night mode. I don't have windows ten and would love this feature for my windows 7 please. Loved the Halloween one and have been waiting patiently.
"There are a few loose ends that we need to tie up before making the feature available"
It's been 6 months. Lucky for you we are all blind now, so go ahead and release dark mode for another 1 day in October again, and tell everyone how exciting it is, then turn it off again for another year. It's really amazing how large tech companies can move this slowly for legitimately useful features but put monumentous effort into silly holiday ****. Remember kids, when someone says you're fit for middle management, JUST SAY NO! Otherwise you end up like all the decisionmakers at MS.
People have been angry at Microsoft for years for removing the dark theme. You guys are really in a different world. Take away the good and add the bad. The only reason you exist is the lack of competition in the corporate environment. Why don't you listen to the people and make it a priority to keep them happy? To the executive that made the decision the dark theme should be removed - your fired!

There needs to be a dark/night mode for the interface of entire outlook as well as MSN website. This will provide better user experience as well as health benefits.
