4 column layout is not good for reading email content.
the screen is separated into 4 columns: folder list, email subject list, email content and ads. I do not mind ads but it takes a huge potion of screen if 4 columns!
I can't read the email content in such a small column area!
No one write an email that expected people read in column!
Hi all – First off thanks for all of the valuable feedback. We review it all and try to ensure we are addressing things! I just wanted to give some updates about all of the feedback about the multiple columns
We totally understand that some of you really do not enjoy the multi column or reading pane on the right hand side.
So we have introduced a few quick settings that will allow you to configure the experience in a way that is pleasing to you.
Once you are logged into your mailbox (and in the Beta) do the following
1) Click on the Gear in the top right hand corner
2) This will show the Quick Settings Pane
3) The items you will likely want to configure are Reading Pane. For this you can Either turn it off, have it on the bottom, or on the right.
4) Message Preview – If you want the more single line view of your messages (subject only), turn this off.
One thing to call out, as you make changes in the quick settings pane your inbox will update right away. This should help you find the setting and experience that you enjoy the most.
Please keep all of the great feedback coming!
Beta version is similar to the mobile template on my ipad only with more columns which is fine on the ipad but not so much on desktop. I can hide the navigation pane but then have to reopen when I need it. Could probably get used to it. Main issues I found so far is I have to click the ... to open a string of emails. Which is inefficient as I almost always need to know what the previous email reads. Biggest annoyance for me was that the email view pane is jumpy. When hovering over the inbox list the current email screen re-renders every time you move your cursor to different items in the list even though you aren't clicking on anything. That's as far as I got before giving up on the beta version. I also do prefer to be able to at least hover to see the email address which saves me from opening email that isn't legit. ie says it's from paypal but isn't. Having to go to the email then click on the drop down to view the sender details is too time consuming. Will try again with other functionality when it's been updated with some of the other helpful comments already provided.
I'd like to have the option of expanding the read/write field. I don't like this three columns (folders/emails/text) with an equal size.
I absolutely agree with the majority views. Please do not lay out such a format in Beta that spoils the Outlook system rather than improving it. Thank you.
The new layout with 3 columns makes it very hard to read the content on the email, which is a step back on simplifying the user experience.
The preview column is not necessary, just makes the whole experience a bit stressful and the interface looks too cluttered.

No old version far better. Cannot even get this one to open properly to read. Too many verticle columns, cluttered.& like other programs
too many columns and the sender & message column had been greatly reduced, thus restricting the message preview area and dont know how to reduced the size of the ads located at the extreme right of the panel
This new version has a very small window to read mails, especially those which have big pictures. Having to displace manually through the window to read them is a bad thing, but is worst to not be able to see a whole picture itself in that small window.

I can not see more than half of my e-mail text as the page is taken up by two other vertical columns
I do not like outlook I like to have hot mail back P L E LA S E
I like the old version better. I prefer to be able to stretch the "open mail" column on the right to cover a larger area, in stead of having to scroll around to see it. Please make all sections able to be increased or decreased in size by the user.

Too cluttered and messy. I want to be able to read my messages on my wide screen, not have them sorted in columns that divide my widescreen into narrow columns that I have to move around to read my messages. I don't want a complex email page. Email. Don't overthink it. I just want to be able to see, read and then sort and archive them.
1/ : On a rather square screen, the list of folders and list of emails are taking at least half of the screen, making any email unreadable.
2/ : There is a lack of options as reading an email. Especially in conversations.
But the very good thing is the return of the tidy (?) option (Ranger in French) that allows to delete mails by packs from sender email. Though I'm not sure I can delete multiple contact's emails at once, as I could 2 years ago or so (not tried yet) Very usefull and a shame it's gone on the standard version !.

It was a little slower to load Mail Components, though no major bug. I just didn't like that I couldn't resize my open email, or even could find how to hide the columns/menu on my screen.
I think the UI should be more clean with less options just popping into ur face
As mentioned in lots of other reviews, it is hard to distinguish different parts of the service and it looks cluttered and messy. You can see very few emails at a time in the list which is annoying.
On my macbook air (which is my only computer), emails do not fit on the small section of the screen when you click on them from the list. I would have to open the emails in a new window to see the full email without having to side-scroll. If I moved the email list and folder list and made their sections smaller so that I could see more of each email then navigating those two sections would become difficult. Opening emails in a new window and making the other two sections smaller completely defeats the purpose of having a layout like this.
That was all I tried before I went back to the old version.

TL/DR: Too much screen taken up by non-email content. I can't make my browser large enough to not side-scroll emails. It's a really ****** email experience.
Way too much space taken up by navigation, not enough by content. Likely my favorite folders aren't going to change much, there's no reason to take up a 5th of the page with that as a full column. (side note — I know you need ads to survive, but having another 5th of my screen taken up by ads when I can't minimize any of the columns is frustrating.)
In the next column (sender, subject, and preview), the row heights are so large that I can only see the first 7 messages. I have 7 messages pinned to the top of my inbox — so can't view any new content. Make the row height smaller, and allow me to minimize my pinned messages. I know what those are, I just need them to be accessible without searching for them.
Allow me to sort/filter unread messages with a single click, don't make me use a drop down.
When I am on a messages, update it to read.
Please please please improve loading speed.
everything is cluttered and takes too much space. focused/other tab is another step to filter through. by the time I find the email and open the message, it is in a 2 inch column and I cant even read the **** thing

Visually it's too stuffy. Some people can not concentrate. You should give us the opportunity to delete columns if that is what we want
Not enough screen space to read messages. Also, can't change the reading pane setup...

not enough screen space to read the mail. i prefer to click on it and have dedicated page. at least on my inbox. for spam it would be fine. if this sound wrong, maybe i didnt find out how to do it right
Delete the third column where you can see the text of your last email recieved. It's much better having the email list and then click on the email you want to read.
Also, this version is still sooooooo slow.

set it out better, like office 365
