I often use multiple categories for my calendar entries. For easy understanding of calendar entries, I could choose which category/colour would show as the main category and which as secondary, by selecting the categories 1st or last. Now suddenly, Outlook lists the categories alphabetically and the 1st category alphabetically is the main colour.
For example, the main colour would be for the category Prospect Meeting and the secondary colour for Online Meeting. Now, Outlook reverses this. It is more important for me to see that it is a prospect meeting (as opposed to a team meeting) than it is an online meeting.
Why does Microsoft always break stuff that works????

My calendar is just a blur of stuff; I cannot see how you would think losing the categorisation is an improvement.... What's more annoying I synchronise with a football calendar and that has categories but I can't use them.... Grrrrrrrr!

There is only a tiny little line of colour when you click the chosen colour. And there is no colour on my mobile phone app (android)

I have this option, both when setting up the meeting and by right clicking it in calendar view afterwards, don't understand this one.

Who had the 'bright' idea to do away with the ability to categorize meetings, etc. with different colors?? It was a very useful function and now it's gone!! Not smart, in my humble opinion!

I have Outlook 2016 running on Windows 10. I recently installed Office 2016. I want to be able to add a <Categorize> icon in the ribbon of New Appointments. At the moment to add a category I have to click on File, then Properties, and there, at the bottom of the box is a <Categorize> icon. I can't do this on an appointment already set up. If I make a mistake I have to delete the appointment and start again.
This what I want but in both new and existing appointments.
I have tried to add <Categorize> using the Customize the Ribbon facility but the icon doesn't appear in the Ribbon.

I used to be able to set up automatic color coding for calendar events. For example, typing whenever I typed "meeting" the event would automatically have a unique color. I would love to have this functionality reinstated.

Agreed. This is 2019 after all!

The categorize function is extremely helpful to easily identify various types of meetings such as monthly recurring, meetings you are also invited to just in case but may be optional, etc. Used it often. Visually more user friendly for identifying.

The workaround for this problem is to open a new task. Select 'Categorize" from the ribbon. Then 'All categories..." Either create a new category or select an existing one and add a shortcut key to it (I use CTRL+F7). Then click 'OK'. Now, even when the Categorize option isn't available on the ribbon (such as is the case with appointments), enter CTRL+F7 and your default category will be applied. Right click on that default category and you can then select the actual category you desire, for that appointment. From a Task you can create your entire set of color categories you want. This is the most cumbersome solution, but the only one I've found. I take it a step further and use gSyncit to sync my calendar to Google calendar, including the categories. It takes a little while to set up, but it works.

I'm able to categorize meetings in the latest version . . . Unless there's an update that hasn't come through yet.

Are there any updates planned to restore categories to to the calendar? If not, is it possible to use an older version of the calendar with outlook 2016. Can you provide step-by-step instructions on how to do this?
