I agree the process is so convoluted the way it is.

I can't believe how hard it is to use out of office. I don't even have the out of office in the file menu. Shame on Microsoft for not making this easy in the first place.

There is a Mail Responder for Outlook add-in that does exactly what you're requesting.
Please note that I am a Microsoft employee (not on the Outlook team), so the add-in may or may not be available in your organization. -

Why is outlook auto office reply made so hard? even google how to set up it is so hard and so many steps. just have a button in file with out of office reply, click, enter comment and set. then when logging back onto emails have a prompt asking if you want it turned off. after 10pm on a Friday night and still trying to set the thing.

I think Outlook on the desktop could benefit from some kind of fusion with Outlook on the web or some way to keep those experiences relatively consistent. Outlook on the web has a nice wizard that's easy to get to for OOF.
Alternatively, you can search for it in the "Tell me what you want to do" search field.

I'm not sure why you can't just create an "appointment" which has a status of OOF. At the appointed time it just activites with your auto-reply message.

Why is there no button to simply click on for setting up an auto reply? All of this going through settings and setting up "new rules" is complicated and a pain **********.
Should just have a button to click on on the "home" page that allows you to enter your message and click "activate". -

I can see the "Automatic reply" option, but seems it is disabled and no response when I click on that. Also I couldn't able to enable it.

You can add the icon in the quick access toolbar or the ribbon.

How about making out of office recurring? e.g. every friday.

How about a "Automatic reply" button on the section called "Respond".. seems pretty intuitive to me.
I believe OOO functionality is used by almost everybody, it should not be hidden in the "File" section. Just my 2 cents

I do not have an Automatic replies button and was advised to use "Rules and Alerts" instead. There is no template that I can use or file I can access for the message this way.

"Automatic Replies" is the button you're looking for, and it's on the File tab. Or, in the "Tell me what you want to do", typing "Out of office" or "Automatic replies" will also get you there. You can also customize the ribbon to give yourself another button to hit.
