We can't open 'file_location.msg'. It's possible the file is already open, or you don't have permission to open it.

This issue is fixed in the latest Current Channel builds. (Ref bug 628461). You can check the builds on this page, https://technet.microsoft.com/library/mt592918.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396. For users on Deferred Channel the fix should release in the major February 2017 update. If you need the fix immediately you can switch to Current Channel, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3185078. Admins can switch channels in the portal admin settings at http://portal.office.com.

    We're still having the same issue (it's March, 2019) in Outlook 2016. :(

    Is this problem the same as opening a desktop .msg file, closing it, then not being able to delete it until outlook is shut down?

    I see this issue on (where is Help About? thats part of the Win3.1 Microsoft Design Guide? :) ) Office 365, hopefully latest April 2018 updates.

    Hi, I am experiencing same issue in Win10. My Office version is Version 1605 (Build 6965.2117). I have already tried east fix. It found ID: 20201 problem but did not help for above mentioned problem. Any help will be appreciated.

    PS: This problem is in my company laptop. I am not sure whether the Office updates are available for this version. Now it seems updating.
