Open Outlook msg files on the Mac
We store .msg files in SharePoint document libraries and OneDrive, and to my surprise they would not open in Outlook 2016 for Mac.
If there is not a trick to make this work, it should definately be a feature!
Thank you for your feedback, we have reviewed this feature, unfortunately, we will not be implementing this feature as this does not align with our overall goals.
You can use the attach Outlook item option, or use drag and drop to attach the message in Windows Outlook or Mac. Doing this will ensure other clients can open the attached message.
Thank you for your continued participation in making Outlook for Mac better.

It's a shame Microsoft is not compatible with himself!!!! Please add this feature!

If you're comfortable running a Java program, there is an open source viewer called MsgViewer that works for me... https://sourceforge.net/projects/msgviewer/
Supporting ones own proprietary file format on one of two platforms your software runs on isn't a feature it is pure hygien - shame microsoft

I tried dragging a message with an MSG attachment to the desktop, and sure enough, it became an EML file, but when I opened it, I got the same message with the MSG attachment, and I still cannot see what's inside the attachment. It's sad that the support gave such advice to a customer instead of being open about the Outlook limitation. I fully share the sentiment of other posters. But let's do something. Let's get our colleagues to vote this issue to the top!

I got form support:
when you receive a.msg format attachment on Mac, you will have to just drag the attachment to the desktop so that it will get automatically converted to .eml format.
In environments where there are windows and mac users, emails saved as .msg formats are inaccessible on a mac. This is a big productivity killer on mac.
Is the only workaround for this to have Outlook on a Windows VM just to open a .msg file?

Why do I even have to ask for this and waste votes on it? If webmail can do it, you should be ASHAMED of yourselves for not having this working by now.
Our CRM software uses .MSG attachments to store customer emails which I cant download and open on my Mac.
This should be basic functionality since it's their own bl**dy file format!

I'm wondering why such a logic basic function won't be transported to the mac world too - somebody slept bei MS?

Makes no sense at all. Right now I run a Parallels windows VM with a copy of Outlook installed (no accounts setup) so I can open attached .msg files in Jira. Talk about hodge Podge.

Almost 1 year after this suggestion and we are unable to open a file developed by own Microsoft. =|
Unbelievable and actually incredible!!!

It is almost unbelievable that such feature is not available. It prevents me from using Outlook for working. I thought that it was meant exactly for this purpose :-)

This is an item that really drives me mad... moved from Windows to Mac and using Outlook for Mac for work, and its making me so mad that I can't open these saved files created in Outlook for Windows!!!
Its quite surprising that a company that prides itself of interoperability hasn't addressed such a basic need.
This drives me crazy, indeed. We need this so often in our company. And I honestly cannot believe that I have to write a feature request for that Outlook should understand its own proprietary container file format. I mean, duh?!
A third party software developer (see AppStore for examples) has to come and teach Outlook its own fileformat?!?! Unbelievable!
This is a must and asap, too.
Please do it! I am driving crazy without the possibility to open msg-files with my MacOS-Outlock?!
I cannot open *.msg format emails via outlook only*.EML open on MAC
It is a no-go that a software company does not support an OWN format with their product on another platform. I think not that Apple would make also such a failure.
This must be solved as soon as possible and can't be a big issue because all needed code does already exist.
I save a mail under Outlook for Windows and on my Macbook with Office 2016 it is imposiible to open it! Crazy situation!

one of my customer use to save some of his email as .msg on Windows, and could not open with Mac+Office 2016. their working environment have about 50% PC as well as Mac, so this feature is very important for them.
