Open Outlook msg files on the Mac
We store .msg files in SharePoint document libraries and OneDrive, and to my surprise they would not open in Outlook 2016 for Mac.
If there is not a trick to make this work, it should definately be a feature!
Thank you for your feedback, we have reviewed this feature, unfortunately, we will not be implementing this feature as this does not align with our overall goals.
You can use the attach Outlook item option, or use drag and drop to attach the message in Windows Outlook or Mac. Doing this will ensure other clients can open the attached message.
Thank you for your continued participation in making Outlook for Mac better.

Wow. I feel all the frustration including myself. I have to use a 3rd party app to open an Outlook MSG file extension. Do you see the issue with this story? disappointing MS

WTF, this answer and explanation makes no sense. It smells like multitasking and putting an answer for another post into this one or having too much to s@%ke...

ADMIN, just remember your unqualified statement in your discharge interview!

Not acceptable Admin. If you're going to support Outlook for Macs then you have to support your own file formats on Outlook for Macs. This should be a no brainer.

Doesn't align with your overall goals of...what? Being a bunch of monopolistic pr**ks? This is why i've been MSFT free since 2003. I wouldn't take a PC or MSFT product if they paid me to.
Just one more reason my startup WILL NOT use MSFT products.

just saddening to read that response from MS. So the overall goal doesn't include that functionality and interoperability should be platform independent? That's just plain crazy. We work in teams that have both Windows and Mac machines, and sometimes mails are saved as attachment in userstories (on lira for instance). now to read that on my Mac I need to save it locally, then go to outlook online, create a draft, attach the msg file, and then open the attachment.
even if you don't want to include this in the full blown outlook for Mac, you should at least provide an easy way to directly open a msg file on the Mac. -

How can I flag this (dumb) response by the Mac Outlook Team as "inappropriate"?!

Try MailRaider by 45RPM Software (me). It works well - and if you discover an incompatibility, get in touch with me and I'll fix it. You can also watch a video about how to open Outlook files on a Mac (https://youtu.be/ZHl4SXmEfC4) or read more on the 45RPM Software website (https://45rpmsoftware.com/software/mailraider.php)

Opening files saved by Outlook in Outlook is not a goal of Outlook.

Suddenly, if you want to change your MSG to MBOX file format then try to Outlook MSG to MBOX Converter Tool. https://www.softaken.com/msg-to-mbox-converter

Wow, just wow. Are the overall goals to drive people away from MS? Because it's working.

This is saddening. Only makes me want to go further away from Microsoft.

What a disgusting answer. Outlook for Mac product managers and developers should be absolutely embarrassed for their inability to delivery such a basic, essential feature.

It is such a disappointment. If it wasn't because of my clients I would uninstall everything Microsoft from my Mac.

So what Microsoft is saying is, in essence: "Our products MAY be named the same for different platforms, but don't expect them to work together." <sarcasm> Really smart. </sarcasm> And then MS wonder why they've bled revenue to competition. Agile competition that actually listens to customers is the competition that is going to receive the big bucks and the adoration, in the long run.

Dear ones,
I believe that your product must be fully integrated with other versions,

I want to further that question... why does Outlook 20xx for the Mac being able to open .MSG files 'not further the goals of the product'? The only reason I can see is you prefer everyone use the web client. If that is case, the .MSG files that are extracted from outlook clients and attached to other media also aren't readable... Why can't use use standard MIME format mails. Or is it a DRM solution... we're adults here, we'd like to know why we should tell our macintosh using customers/partners a reason they should spend money so we can buy MS products.
you could have just stuck with winmail.dat format files... at least there were free scripts to read those.
If microsoft can't even advertise their standard for people to create custom file handlers, we are back to the bad old days of non-open standards.
