Add back the option of coloring column view text by Category
The old Outlook 2011 Categories would change the color of the text in the column view of a message or note, meaning that colors of an important category of email/note/task could stand out to the eye quickly. Now for messages, there is only a small bar or dot, and you can't even tell a note or task is categorized without selecting that note, or unchecking other categories in the sidebar. It would be very nice to see the category breakdown of a list of things at a glance, like I used to be able to.
Please add back an option to have the category color alter the text color of the Note/Email/Task in the column listing.

We "upgraded" to Outlook 2016 for Mac and it's been a disaster. We receive more than a hundred emails a day and depend on our ability to color code our inbox by category so that client emails quickly stand out to the eye. Outlook 2016 inexplicably dropped this feature. Outlook 2011 for Mac color-coded our inbox consistently and reliably, but it is no longer supported. Microsoft has no idea how it is hurting small businesses with the removal of this feature.

This is ridiculous that this feature does not exist. A tiny little colored square? Seriously? Please add the ability to colorize the entire email, or the whole item in the listing pane.
This request was shared nearly 4 1/2 years ago. Microsoft doesn't even try to pretend it cares what its customers need or want anymore. Our whole team finally switched to Apple Mail. Way less buggy and we can use mail rules to color incoming email!

Yeah the tiny bar is almost useless. Please please please make the label visibility better .. did I say please?
Hey MS, wake up and bring these option back to life
I agree! This feature AND the inability to use many different colours for categories are reasons why I continue to return to version 2011!
Please, please bring back these features. It is critical to be able to view the calendars and mail quickly using colour!
MICROSOFT!!!! Come on it has been FOUR YEARS! Fix This Already! We need EMAIL and contact category COLOR! Read vs Unread is an irrelevant outdated way of looking at email. All we need is to know SHOULD we read an email. CATEGORY email COLOR solved this problem! We could see instantly if the message should be read. If it was part of a group or project or contact we knew. Instantly! HOW can the Microsoft Developers NOT understand how desperately valuable this feature is/was!?!
I preferred when you could assign a contact a certain color and then in my inbox, the name of the sender would appear in that color. Working in multiple elementary schools, it was easier to keep track of which school a parent is connected to that way. A small square on the right hand side is not as impactful as having the name display the color.
Please bring back the Colour categories in the navigation pane. I use this feature all the time to quickly identify calendar items and to view/print out future calendars containing only one category, eg hearings. Now I can't. This version of Outlook is not an update. It does not make my life easier, even the simple "streamlined" design is bland. Why even bother having Categories if all I see is a teeny tiny block in list view? Having the whole line in a particular category colour was much MUCH easier to identify. Why fix stuff that isn't broken?
I'm going crazy with out this feature! I have a more recent version of outlook I bought for a new computer and I had to install 2011 for this feature.
Microsoft clearly doesn't care about our needs. Nearly four years later and they still haven't implemented these fundamental improvements for Outlook's email problems. This lack of EMAIL BY COLOR CATEGORY is one the biggest downgrades of Office & Outlook and really any app ever. We've finally decided to move our whole company to Gmail for everything. Outlook lost it's only defining feature with the lack of color coded emails.

Used colour all the time on previous version of outlook to assist with identification within a folder or mail box
The colour of the entire title, including FROM, SUBJECT, DATE RECEIVED use to change in the Inbox according to the category you added to it, better for visibility and efficiency when working. In the new Outlook 2016 fr mac this feature is not longer active. I don't see the logic of why it's been changed.
Microsof is like United Airlines – we don't care, we don't have to.

The response from Microsoft was, and I quote:
Thank you for your feedback, we have reviewed this feature, unfortunately, we will not be implementing this feature as this does not align with our overall goals. Thank you for your continued participation in making Outlook for Mac better."
"...we will not be implementing this feature as this does not align with our overall goals." Excuse me? What exactly are "your overall goals"? To aggravate enough Mac users by keeping SEVERAL functionalities available in Outlook for PCs from being available in Outlook for Macs??? I find this insulting and disrespectful. The color categories are an invaluable tool for keeping all the emails organized. It helps manage messages as well as find them quickly. Please add this feature back!!

This is seems like a crazy omission for a product that ostensibly should be helping us organize our email. Certain emails I can file and folders, and that's fine, but there's lots of stuff I need in my main window that I need to be able to quickly identify and have prioritized. Color is the best way to do that, and having a little dot of color, barely visible, does not remotely accomplish that. Please add some way to set text color for a message. Ideally, a system like Apple Mail, that allows both the setting of foreground (text) and background color would be perfect for allowing someone to organize a wide variety of messages.
This is critical if you get a whole lot of email from a whole lot of sources on a whole lot of projects. Which I do.
The color does not show up in Windows either. The category column only shows the text of the category but not the color like Outlook 2011 did. Strangely, the color shows up if you move the category column to the right of your subject or date column. Microsoft, please fix!!!
I just spent HOURS installing Outlook 2011 so I could migrate my email from Entourage, then installing Outlook 2016 so I could migrate my email from Outlook 2011 only to find out that the email color feature had been done away with in Outlook 2016! Microsoft, if you don't really want to write good software for Mac, then let someone else do it, and concentrate on PC software. This is ridiculous. You can make non-modifiable changes to existing software, so why not add an option so we can do it ourselves?!?!?!
I can't believe that very soon this request will be 3 years old! C'mon Microsoft.
